Palma.—The water levels at one of the island´s main reservoirs rose by 40cms in the space of a few hours following the heavy rains on Friday which hit the north of the island.
Rain of up to 90 litres of water per square metre was registered in some parts of the island on Friday. The clean-up and rescue operation is still underway in the San Lorenzo area, where 13 people died last week. In the Pollensa/Alcudia/Sa Pobla areas the heavy rains on Friday caused extensive damage.
The central administration has declared the San Lorenzo area a disaster zone following the floods which will enable all those affected to claim aid from the government to help repair the damage.
Initial estimates have indicated that the heavy rains caused damages of in excess of 20 million euros.
